Honesty and Identity: How Who You Are, Shapes Who You BecomeNaming and understanding one’s own identity can directly influence how you interact with those around you, society at large, and even yourself. While some personal identities are easily understood and recognized, others take time and energy to admit and understand. Through group discussion and personal reflection, we will begin to tackle the hard questions that shape who we are and push us to who we can become.
BIO:Breinne Reeder is the Managing Director of Chicago Dramatists, a non-profit that works with playwrights to help them tell their story. She has an MA from the University of Michigan specializing in Diversity and Social Justice, and has spent 15 years working in theatre as both a director and writer. She previously held positions as the Executive Director of Accord Hospice of Sedona, and the Artistic Director of Emerson Theater Collaborative. Breinne is also the founder of RISE (Reshaping Inclusivity, Sowing Empathy) Consulting Services, which specializes in cultivating cultural competence training methods for organizations.

Our monthly zoom meeting is Tuesday, January 11, 6:30 PM MST.
This month our speaker is our own JJ O’Brien! Great way to start the new year.
JJ (John/Jennifer) O’Brien is the past president and member of PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley and is a non-binary person who lives as both a man and a woman.   JJ will tell their personal story of self-discovery and working through their fears, and will also discuss transgender related issues, including definitions, pronouns and using public restrooms.
JJ has lived in Sedona for 36 years and was the City of Sedona’s Community Development Director, working for the city for 24 years before retiring in 2012.   JJ currently volunteers as the sports announcer at Sedona Red Rock High School and has announced football, basketball and volleyball for the past 16 years.
The presentation will be followed by our support meeting at 7:30 PM.

PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley will be holding its next support meeting on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held on Zoom. 
We will first hold our brief Annual Meeting to elect the new Board of Directors and Officers for FY 2021-22 and will then have our support meeting speaker and program, followed by our support group portion of the meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Our speaker will be Kourtni Nelson.  Kourtni will tell her story of growing up in the Verde Valley as a lesbian woman, coming out to her family, and marrying the woman of her dreams.  Kourtni will also talk about her experience at high school and the life changing moment and positive influence a program sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League had on her.  This program focused on tolerance and the relatability of gay people and heterosexual people.  As a result of this program, Kourtni has a big desire to support and reach out to LGBTQ youth in the Verde Valley.
Kourtni Nelson graduated from Cottonwood’s Mingus High School in 2010 at the age of 17.  Kourtni currently works in luxury sales at an art and jewelry gallery in Tlaquepaque in Sedona.  Her hobbies include traveling with her wife, reading, listening to music, makeup, animals, and the need to help others.

Sedona Public Library Director, Judy Poe, will be the featured speaker at the Tuesday, June 8, 2021 PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley support meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom.   Judy will discuss the Sedona Public Library’s vision, future plans and programs, including the possibility of having an LGBTQ related collection/section at the library.
Judy Poe has a Masters of Information and Library Science degree and became director of Sedona Public Library in January 2021, after serving as assistant director for the past two years. Prior to her move to Sedona, Judy managed the Yavapai Library Network, a public, academic, and school library consortium across Yavapai County. From 2009 to 2015 Judy held nearly every position possible at the Pine River Library in Bayfield, Colorado which was named Library Journal’s 2014 Best Small Library in America.
Raised in Pennsylvania, Judy has lived in Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, and New Mexico, before moving to Arizona in 2017.  Judy’s volunteer experience also includes therapeutic horseback riding in North Carolina and she is one of the founders of Pine River Shares, a community-based leadership program sharing skills, knowledge, food, and other resources in the Pine River Valley, near Bayfield, Colorado.
