Our monthly PFLAG Sedona / Verde Valley meeting is Tuesday March 9, and begins at 6:30 PM MST. We will be showing the movie “Becoming Johanna” – made available to us by PFLAG national. Afterwards, starting at 7:30 PM MST, we will have our usual support meeting. Same zoom link for both – link is below.
About the film:Filmed over the course of five years, Becoming Johanna is a portrait of a teen-aged transgender Latina who faces bullying at school and misunderstanding at home. When she gets kicked out of her school and her home for standing up for herself, she finds a loving foster family and a sympathetic alternative high school principal who help her to grow into the beautiful young woman she was meant to be.About the filmmaker: Jonathan Skurnik’s many award-winning documentaries have broadcast on PBS and cable channels in the US and on European television. His films have screened at over a hundred film festivals and art galleries around the world. As an activist and educator, Jonathan creates ground-breaking grassroots outreach and engagement projects for his films that provide transformational educational experiences through facilitated screenings, activities and discussions and immersive digital resources on handheld devices and the web. Jonathan also teaches documentary filmmaking classes at universities, writes and directs narrative films, and creates video art installations.

Our monthly PFLAG Sedona / Verde Valley Tuesday meeting begins at 6:30 PM. Our speaker will be Joey Morelli of Unify Sedona.
Joey Morelli is a retired law enforcement officer and 911 first responder from New York City.  He relocated to Sedona in 2017.  Joey currently serves on the Board of Directors of Unify Sedona and Northern Arizona Restorative Justice.  He is the current program and logistics coordinator for the Crossing Worlds Hopi Project.  Joey has participated in the grant review process for the Arizona Community Foundation, both in Phoenix and Sedona.   Joey’s presentation will focus on Unify Sedona activities, the upcoming Transgender Day of Remembrance events on November 20th and he will also tell his story.  

The Emerson Theater Collaborative and PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley have partnered on the performance of the play, Stop Kiss, to be shown on October 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 at The Collective Sedona, 7000, Hwy. 179, Suite C-100 in the Village of Oak Creek. (See attached flyer for show times and more information).

Stop Kiss is the story of two female friends who, after their first kiss, are the victims of a hate crime. The play tells the story of their developing relationship as well as the aftermath of the crime and their attempts to move forward.

The Emerson Theater Collaborative is a 5-1(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to serve youth, under-represented communities and artists with an emphasis on diversity, by producing innovative ad thought-provoking theater both in southeastern Connecticut and Sedona, Arizona.

The Emerson Theater Collaborative explores timely themes and issues through new, original works and modern theatrical classics.  The organization develops and nurtures both emerging and professional artists, and collaborate with the Emerson College network of alumni and students. Their goals include reaching youth through educational theatrical programming, supporting local communities by providing free admission to low-income families and donating profits to humanitarian causes.

Due to COVID-19, precautions will be in place during the performance of Stop Kiss.  A maximum of 35 tickets will be sold per show.  Patrons will be seated with those they purchase tickets with, but will be socially distanced from other groups by a minimum of six feet. In addition, patrons will be required to wear masks and sign a waiver upon entry.

PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley will be holding its annual meeting and election of Board members and officers for the 2020/2021 fiscal year (October 1, 2020-September 30, 2021).   PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley members may vote on the proposed slate of Board members/officers and may nominate other possible Board members/officers at the annual meeting.  Board members/officers who have been previously nominated are as follows:

Note: we have been holding two monthly support meetings – one on our usual second Tuesday, and another additional meeting on the 4th Tuesday. We are discontinuing the 4th Tuesday meetings, and going to holding support meetings on the Second Tuesday only.
