On Monday, December 14, 2015 at the regular support meeting of PFLAG Sedona/Verde Valley, we will be screening a video of a heartfelt and inspirational presentation by transgender teen, Hunter Schafer, and her family. Our moderator for the evening will be Rev. Larry Corbett of The Church of the Red Rocks. Rev. Corbett is a friend of the Schafer family and brought this moving program to the attention of PFLAG.
Hunter was born a boy, but from the time she was a very young child, always felt like a girl. By eighth grade, she discussed her feelings with her parents and began educating them on what it means to be transgender. Shortly thereafter, Hunter began taking hormone blockers to stop and halt her puberty so she did not develop as a male. Hunter started her sophomore year of high school as the girl she always knew she was. During her presentation, Hunter discusses her long journey of self-discovery. Her parents and siblings discuss their journey of acceptance and unconditional love of their new daughter and sister.
The Schafer Family hopes that their story will help inspire and educate people about what being related to someone who is transgender means and the unique experiences that come along with this in a world where the visibility of the LGBTQ community is rapidly growing.
The support meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Painted Cliffs Hall at The Church of the Red Rocks, 54 Bowstring Drive, Sedona. You won’t want to miss this meeting! All are invited and welcome to attend.
