McGill had previously held the rank of Assistant Police Chief for the Newport Beach Police Department in California. Prior, he honorably served with the Los Angeles Police Department for over 25 years, working a variety of assignments including patrol and detectives, anti-terrorism, Internal Affairs, and as the Adjutant to Chief of Staff. During his LAPD career, Chief McGill was awarded numerous commendations and citations, including the Police Medal, the second highest award for valor.
